Max Patterson is a successful novelist, living as a recluse in a Gothic Irish mansion. He likes to think he is self-sufficient, but in fact he's been in a wheelchair since a childhood trauma. So when he is told that his best friend has been killed in a car accident, leaving him responsible for two children, Max couldn't be more alarmed. Nor, for that matter, could the children in question. Fifteen-year-old Caroline and her younger brother Nigel are shell-shocked after the death of their parents, and as unhappy as Max about their move to Ireland.
